Chapter Guide : NSASD Awards



Incentive Award
Purpose: to increase awareness of nursing students in the various aspects of the nursing profession in areas outside of the classroom.
This award is:
  • optional
  • awarded as a traveling trophy and certificate of recognition which is presented at the annual convention awards banquet.

  • judged by an award committee of at least 5 people chosen by the Second Vice President. Each school shall have no more than 1 member on the award committee).
  • time period of the award: end of the previous annual convention to the current annual convention.

    Scoring will be set as follows:
  • Community Service Activities
         · 2-6 pts per activity
         · # of pts awarded to be decided by the award committee
         · specifically list when, and % of membership involved
  • Input to the Pacemaker
         · 1 pt per article
         · NSASD Executive Board reports/letters are not included
         · school news is included
         · list title of article, author, and issue of Pacemaker
  • Members running for NSASD Executive Board
         · 2 pts for each member running for an office on the NSASD Executive Board
         · only includes those running for the upcoming term
         · list name(s) and corresponding office(s)
  • Active members on NSASD Committees
         · 1 pt per member
         · members may be on more than one committee (i.e. If 1 member is actively involved
           in 2 committees, 2 pts will be awarded)
         · committee chairs are included
         · award committee is responsible for consulting with the appropriate committee chair
           to determine member's level of involvement in the committee
         · list name(s), committee(s), and position held in the committee if any
  • Productivity of fund raising by local NSA
         · 1 point for $50 raised, 2 points for $100 raised, and additional points for every $100
           raised after that
         · Speakers
         · 2 pts per speaker at local NSA meeting
         · list date of meeting, name of speaker, and topic of presentation
  • NSASD Meeting
         · 1 pt per NSASD meeting hosted
         · list date of meeting
  • Additional points will be awarded upon the discretion on the award committee for the presentation (i.e. Posters, displays) at the annual convention of activities pertaining to the incentive award.

         · NOTE: Each local organization who submits an entry for consideration of this award shall do so with the utmost honesty and integrity that the nursing profession demands. No school shall be disqualified from the competition without first being allowed the opportunity to present their case to the Executive Board and the SDNA Advisor.

    Outstanding Nursing Student of South Dakota
    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • The candidate must be in his/her last year of nursing school
  • the candidate must be a member of NSASD
  • The candidate must be in the upper one-half of his/her class scholastically as designated by local school standards
  • The candidate shall write a 250-500 word essay. The topic of the essay will be decided on a yearly basis. Six copies of the essay are to be prepared. One is to be given to the director of the candidate's school. Five copies are to be sent to the Outstanding nursing Student Chairperson to be given to the judges prior to the annual convention.
  • Each candidate shall submit a personal synopsis and a black and white photograph to the Pacemaker Editor(s) prior to the convention issue deadline.
  • The candidate must attend the annual convention. At this time he/she will have a personal interview with the judges. The candidate will be notified as to the exact time and place of the interview.
  • Each constituent association may nominate one candidate.
  • The following items must be sent to the Outstanding Nursing Student Chairperson:
         1. a completed nomination form.
         2. five copies of the essay.
    PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Be neat in appearance
  • Possess the ability to work well in team relationships
  • Have the ability to recognize and meet physical, social, psychological, and spiritual needs of the client.
  • Demonstrate a sense of responsibility in carrying out nursing assignments.
  • Have an understanding of the nursing organizations
  • Possess a knowledge of current events and a range of interests beyond nursing
    AWARD
  • All Outstanding Nursing Student Candidates shall receive a certificate of achievement at the awards banquet.
  • The Outstanding Nursing Student of South Dakota shall receive a certificate with his/her name and school indicated, a Nightingale Lamp, and a cash award. The amount of the cash award shall be determined by the Executive Board at the pre-convention board meeting.
  • The outstanding Nursing Student of South Dakota shall read his/her essay following the presentation of the award.

         · NOTE: this award is presented every year. Do not wait for a letter from the Outstanding Nursing Student Committee to begin preparations for choosing a candidate. Rather, begin preparations as early as possible to allow time for your candidate to write his/her essay and submit his/her personal synopsis. It is best to have your candidate chosen a few weeks prior to the end of your school's Fall Semester.

    Excellence in Writing Award
    Purpose: to motivate members to be more proactive and aware in what is going on in the field of nursing, reward the writers for their  outstanding articles and active interest.
    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
      The author must be a member of NSASD.
      The article must be original work.
      The article must be submitted to website administrator Penny Decker prior to January 30th, 2007.
      All articles submitted  that meet the eligibility requirements will be considered for the Excellence in Writing Award.
    JUDGES
      The primary round shall be judged by a professor of English.
      The final selection shall be made from the top 3-5 articles as determined by the scores for the primary round of judging.
      The final selection shall be made by the NSASD Executive Board at the pre-convention board meeting.
    CRITERIA FOR JUDGING
      The guidelines for judging shall be based on:
    -relevance of article to convention theme and nursing
    -Coherence& Conveyance
    -effect of article on reader
    -sentence structure, grammar, spelling
    - Use of references, APA Format
    - 3-5 pages long

    AWARD
    The award this year will include a year subscription to nursing journal of winner’s choice plus $50.

    Naoma Jackson Leadership & Action Award
    This award is to be presented to the student who:

  • Demonstrates high leadership and education goals as a student nurse.
  • Is not in the final year of his/her education at the time of the annual convention.
  • Displays dedication to becoming a nurse by overcoming obstacles to this goal.
  • Actively participates in NSASD and in his/her school's NSA
    REQUIREMENTS
  • Submit a 250 word essay to the Finance Committee at least one month prior to the annual convention explaining the reasons why he/she should be chosen to receive the award.

    JUDGES
  • The Finance Committee will determine the top 5 applicants and present them to the Executive Board at the pre-convention board meeting. The Executive Board will choose the winner at this time.
    AWARD
  • Each local NSA will donate $15, and each newly elected Executive Board Officer will donate $5 to the award fund. Dues shall be collected prior to the January board meeting. If a local NSA chooses not to donate the $15, the local NSA will then be ineligible to nominate a candidate from their local NSA for the award.
  • The NSASD Treasurer shall act as a custodian of the award including depositing the funds in an interest bearing account, reporting the status of the award at the annual meeting, and collecting monies for the funding of the award.
  • The award is designed to be self-perpetuating; when possible, only the interest earned per fiscal year should be used to pay for the plaque expenses.

    Convention Skit Award
  • Each constituent association attending the annual convention shall present a skit at the awards banquet.
  • The skit must relate to the convention theme.
  • Judges will be chosen by the Convention Committee.
  • A trophy will be presented to the winning constituent association.
